Is it Time for Air Conditioner Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When any big change in weather comes and we start taking calls about air conditioners that aren't generating cool air, most of them can be linked back to the lack of air conditioner service and maintenance. If air conditioner concerns are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family out to dry. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for air conditioner service or replacement before your system quits working.

Air Conditioner Age

The normal life expectancy of air conditioners is between 12-17 years. If your air conditioner is 15 years or older it's smart to start air conditioner shopping now. Choosing a new air conditioner isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself plenty of time to view and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Air conditioners lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Air Conditioner Repairs

The last few years of an air conditioner’s life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on air conditioner repair the previous two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Air conditioners start making strange noises near the end of their lifespan. If your air conditioner is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older air conditioners don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these red flags sound like what you are feeling with your air conditioner, it might be time to start thinking about a new system.
